Our Lenten Tithe

Six Weeks! Fish! Pasta Marinara! Cheese! What a journey and what a destination.

Tithe—a return to the Lord of the best we have. Traditionally, when we hear the word “tithe,” we usually think of our treasure. Yet, we often fail to include our time and our talents. Lent is about a tenth of the year and a season perfectly suited to reflection, growth and change. The cold barrenness of winter is gradually losing its grip and the earth is beginning to break forth with new life. What a wonderful opportunity to reflect on how we can make a complete return to the Lord for all He has done for us. (Psalm 116: 12-13)

“The saints and mystics of the church, in tandem with the scriptures, speak of prayer, fasting and almsgiving as the three pillars of discipleship. The pillars form the foundation of the year-round regimen of Christian living. They are disciplines that, many would say, form us as disciples. During Lent we try as best we can to get back to these basics.” (Peter Mazar)

So, it’s time to get back to those basics. We just can't wait for Easter; Lent is a rehearsal for living the Christian life all year long. So, let’s use this Lent to see how we can make a complete return to the Lord.
