Find Your Fig Tree

Every one shall sit under his or her own vine and fig tree, and no one will make them afraid, for Hashem (“the Name”--God) has spoken. Micah 4.4

To plant, notice or nurture any tree is an act of devotion and a gesture of hope. Sitting still beneath one could restore our understanding of the nature of things and just might repay our attention and offer us perspective. Then, ideally, we too would be filled with light and willing to let it flow through us out into the world.

To sit under one’s fig tree seems to have been a symbol of peace.  “During Solomon's lifetime Judah and Israel lived in safety…all of them under their vines and fig trees” (1 Kings 4:25).  Our houses now are so packed with electronic devices that it is hard to find any modern equivalent in them of the fig tree.  It is a challenge to construct a place (or a time) in one’s own home where we can be entirely undisturbed.

It’s no surprise that the Hebrew term for orchard, Pardes, has evolved into the English word, paradise. Being surrounded by the consistent giving of fruit trees and vines is a utopian experience. Lacking not for basic sustenance, we are able to let go of the stress and challenges of daily life, and focus on the spirit and power of the world.
