For one reason or another, some people stop practicing their Catholic faith, and this Christmas season is a perfect time to come home. Many return to the church because they sense an emptiness in their lives which only Jesus can fill. Right now, we have people at St. Joe’s praying for “lapsed Catholics” and eagerly waiting to welcome them back.
So let’s cut to the quick. “Catholic guilt” is probably the biggest obstacle many face in returning to the practice of their faith. The Church is notorious for this product of the ages. It does not come from Jesus who was known for his welcome of the lost. Perhaps only Jesus knows, even more than any, why someone left the Church and why there is a longing to return. Despite the failings of this human institution, we really are waiting for each to return.
The Church can bruise as well as comfort. Was there discomfort with confession; an argument with another parishioner, a sermon we didn’t like, crying children—whatever! Jesus placed so much emphasis on forgiveness and the graces we all need that it’s now time to place these hurts behind us and move forward in hope that things are better.
We are far from perfect and can learn from mistakes. The best way to move forward is to take that first step. Please encourage your family, friends or acquaintances to consider an invitation this New Year to “Come On Home.”
