September 3

Parishioners of SJW:

Good September to you all!  August is history, and we now are in the final months of this year.  Are you all prepared for Christmas yet?  Just kidding!

This Monday, September 4th, is the national holiday of Labor Day.  This day celebrates the working person, his/her contribution to our society.  And we have so many tremendous workers in our country, those that give of themselves each and every day.  Many are out in the elements, cold and hot, making sure our roads are repaired, our buildings built, our houses constructed.  Many are making sure our hotels, schools, and office buildings are clean when we use them.  Many are working overtime in our hospitals and police/fire stations so that we are healthy and protected.  Many are serving us in restaurants, gas stations and retail stores in order for us to be able to purchase needed items or enjoy a dinner out.

Do we thank them?

Do we appreciate their service to us?

Do we admire their labor for the good of us and our nation?

And this brings me to putting Labor Day in connection with our Catholic faith.

How do we labor at being the best followers of Jesus Christ we can be?

Do we work at living out our baptismal promises?

Do we “work up a sweat” through our volunteering at SJW, at a charity, in our neighborhoods?

Would we “hire” ourselves if looking for dedicated disciples of Christ?

Do we labor in the Lord’s vineyard daily and diligently?

May this Labor Day in our country challenge us to consider our “Labor Days” in living out our faith.

Your Pastor, Father Joe

P.S.  And pray for all those who are looking for work.  May they find jobs that are just, fair, and fulfilling.  Finally, may all employers be just and fair in their hiring practices and in the treatment of their employees.
