Dear Parishioners of St. Joseph the Worker:

This week we call to mind two events that have shaped our world—one for the better and one not.

This Monday is the commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  He helped to shape our country, and world, as to racism in our midst.  He did so much to change people’s attitude about people of color.  And his call for justice for all rang out loudly, which altered the way our country treated minorities and those who were oppressed.  He often called for all people, black and white and others, to work together.  Thought---I wonder what Dr. King would say to America right now about the state of our country?  He would probably be appalled at the division, racism, and malice shown by many to others.

This Saturday is the very unfortunate day which calls to mind the passage of the abortion law in our country.  Our Catholic Church has this day as a Day of Reparation for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children.  Since that heinous decision in the early 1970’s, countless millions of babies have been killed, having their lives snuffed out without consequence.  How did this happen then, and how does it continue today?  Where is the respect of all life, whether in the womb, or on death row or skid row, or down the street, or in our own home?

May this Monday & Saturday cause us to reflect on our attitudes and practices in our dealings with others.  May these two days challenge us to be respectful of life, no matter where that life is or how it looks.  May this be our “faith homework” this week and every week.

Your Pastor,

Fr. Joe

P.S.

What a beautiful Restored Order celebration on January 11th at the Cathedral.  Thanks to all the catechists, sponsors, parents, students, Mrs. Janice Anderson, Mrs. Cindy Essex, the SJW musicians and any others who assisted.
