Dear Parishioners of St. Joseph the Worker:
September is upon us. Hope the first week went well. This week is filled with wonderful liturgical celebrations. Let us explore:
Monday, September 8 - The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary
From the 5th century this Feast commemorates that a basilica in Jerusalem was dedicated over the place where tradition says St. Anne lived. St. Anne was the mother of the Virgin Mary. This day has us call to mind the birth of the young girl who would say yes to God to be the Mother of Jesus.
How do we “give birth” to the will of Jesus in our daily actions?
Tuesday, September 9 - St. Peter Claver, Priest
Peter Claver was a Jesuit priest who lived in Cartagena, Colombia. He cared for the African slaves, baptizing over 300,000. He was called “the slave of the slaves.” He died in 1654.
How do we treat those of a different color or from a different country?
Saturday, September 13 - St. John Chrysostom, Bishop and Doctor of the Church
John became the bishop of Constantinople in 397. He was a renowned preacher, being given the name “Chrysostom,” or “golden mouthed.” He worked for the reform of the clergy, as well as reaching out to the poor. He is one of the four great doctors of the Eastern Church. Known as the patron of preachers. He died in 407.
How do we use our speech in a positive way at work, home, or school?
The Saints inspire us to be more than we are. May those mentioned above lead us closer to the Lord.
Your Pastor, Father Joe
