September 21

Dear Parishioners of St. Joseph the Worker:

This Sunday, September 21st, we celebrate National Catechetical Sunday in our American Catholic Church.  This is a day to recognize and give thanks for all those women and men who give of themselves in forming our youth and adults in the Catholic faith.

We are so blessed here at SJW to have very dedicated catechists who share their faith with their students, no matter what age they may be.  This is what the Lord Jesus wanted His followers to do.  He told His Apostles to go forth and preach the Good News.  And that command is still applicable this very day.  Our mission should be to make our Savior known and felt in today’s world.

I thank all those parishioners who have stepped up to teach and witness.  They are committed to ensuring that our youth and adults hear God’s Word and make it part of their lives.  Without our teachers, our various programs would not exist.

Catechetical Sunday is a call to ALL of us to reflect on our FAITH FORMATION.

  • When is the last time we have read a book on spirituality, Scripture, Saints?
  • When is the last time we broke open the Bible and read a chapter?
  • When is the last time we prayed before the Blessed Sacrament?
  • When is the last time we listened to Catholic/Christian hymns?
  • When is the last time we prayed the Rosary?

Our schooling in the Catholic faith is an ONGOING exercise.  We don’t stop when we graduate from Faith Formation classes or when we receive our Confirmation and First Communion.  As we want to keep up on the latest in technology, in medicine, as to current events, etc., so, too, should we keep up with the latest in our faith.  Also, we should want to be the best-informed Catholics we can be and that the Lord expects us to be.

So, on this Catechetical Sunday, let us give thanks to all those we consider teachers in our lives.

Let us pledge ourselves to learn more and more about Jesus daily.

Let us accept the challenge to be the best living examples of our Catholic faith with every breath.

 Your Pastor, Father Joe
