October 19

Dear Parishioners of St. Joseph the Worker:

Can you believe we are over halfway through the month of October?  Two months from this Friday is Christmas Eve.  How can that be?

I am sure you have noticed over the last 10-20 years the emergence of computers, tablets, I-Pads, cell phones, and many other technological advances that have been made.  We have been inundated with being connected to anyone and everything all the time!!  Who would have ever thought that we would be so wired?

Did you ever see some families eating out in restaurants who seem to be unable to “talk” in the regular way?  They are all on their phones, even the parents.  No one is talking to one another.  But, I know at times that some are actually texting one another AT THE SAME TABLE!  Where has old fashioned conversation gone?  You can see the effect of this on people nowadays, especially among the young.  They have a hard time talking to one another face-to-face.

Let’s use the paragraphs above and apply them to our faith and to our relationship with God.

Are we as connected with God as we are with our cell phones and computers?  I am not asking that in a sarcastic or snide way.  I ask it truly.  In this word right now, so many would NEVER go anywhere without their cell phone.  Many use a computer at their place of employment, some being on the computer all day long.  A good number of us would feel “naked” if we didn’t have our phone with us in our purse or pocket.

And if you ask some people if they have talked to someone, they may answer yes, they have.  But what they mean is that they have texted someone, meaning that a text is “talking” to someone.  Is that how we would want to talk to God these days if that were possible?

How CONNECTED are we with the God of our faith?  How much do we ACTUALLY talk to Him every day?

Are we “on our phones” more each day than we are connected to our God?

What if we had to choose between our cell phones and our Lord?

We get upset if our phones run out of juice.  Does it bother us when we don’t have enough energy for the Lord?

How many of us IMMEDIATELY pick up our phone, look at our phone, answer it when someone is calling?  Do we answer as quickly when the Lord is calling us?

Let us look this week at how CONNECTED we are to the Lord of our faith.  Maybe we need to RECHARGE our relationship with Him like we recharge our cell phones!

Your “Cell Phone User” Pastor, Father Joe
