May 11

Dear Parishioners of St. Joseph the Worker:

This Sunday, May 11, is a very special day for two reasons.  One should be very obvious—Mother’s Day.  And the other one is just as important.  More later on.

First, I congratulate all the women in our parish who are moms in any way.  What a beautiful vocation you have undertaken—to nurture the life given to you in your child(ren).  As I have always said: “God knew what He was doing when He made moms.”  I can attest to that firsthand, as my mom was the best ever!  (No bias at all in that statement—ha!)

As I have told many young people since my mom died, take a moment and give your mom a hug, hold her hand, tell her you love her.  I wish I had just one more day to do all those things again to my mom.  Never say that you can do that tomorrow.  Tomorrow may be too late.

My prayer is that all moms enjoy a day of blessing, NO work, full of being pampered, and love experienced in every moment.  Thank you, moms, for being moms!

Now, on to the second reason that May 11 is important.  It is the World Day of Prayer for Vocations.  This is so important as to the clergy in our Church.  We are in such dire need of more priests and religious.  In the bulletin is a prayer card for Vocations.  Please pray daily that men and women choose to listen to Jesus’ call to follow Him as priests and religious sisters.

YOU can be such an important piece in this.  If you know of someone in your family, neighborhood, parish, etc. that you think would be a good priest/sister, ask them and invite them to consider it.  Sometimes all it takes is an invitation.  Maybe they have never thought about it before.  A simple “nudge” may be all that is needed.

SO—we have our “homework” cut out for us this week.  Prayers for all moms.  Prayers for more priestly and religious vocations.  Plus—asking someone to consider being a priest for our diocese or a religious sister in one of the many orders/congregations available.

May Mary, the Mother of Jesus, intercededfor all women who are moms.

May Mary, the Mother of all priests, intercede for all men who have answered God’s call to priesthood.

Your Pastor who loves being a priest, Father Joe
