Dear Parishioners of St. Joseph the Worker:
We continue our journey through the season of reform, renewal, and change. This Lenten period in our liturgical year is a time for us to reflect on how we look in the sight of the Lord. Are our souls as pure as they can be or should be?
Last week, and this week, we have two major celebrations during our Lenten season. These Solemnities, the highest rank given to a liturgical celebration, can lead us to grow in our commitment to being the best modern-day disciples we can be.
On Wednesday, March 19th, was the Solemnity of St. Joseph, Spouse of Mary. Joseph was that man chosen among all men to raise the Son of God, to be that example of care and compassion for the Savior of the world, and to help Jesus grow as a faith-filled Jewish man. St. Joseph was committed to fulfilling his role as a disciple of God. He always said yes to God, even though he may not have understood or fully comprehended.
What type of example are we as followers of Jesus, ones like St. Joseph?
Are we able to say “yes” to God as did St. Joseph?
On Tuesday, March 25th, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord. The angel Gabriel appeared to a young girl named Mary and announced to her God’s plan for her. That plan was for Mary to be the Mother of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. And her response to whether she would do this? It was YES. Her YES enabled the plan of salvation to be put into action, for the Savior to be born into the world. Her openness to whatever the Lord wanted her to do is so exemplary. She was truly the handmaid of the Lord.
How would we have responded to Gabriel?
Mary was open to God’s will. Are we?
May St. Joseph and the Blessed Virgin Mary inspire us to always be open to where God is leading us.
May St. Joseph and the Blessed Virgin Mary intercede for us each day.
May St. Joseph and the Blessed Virgin Mary always be held as special by us.
Your Pastor, Father Joe
