Dear SJW Parishioners:

Welcome to the month of February.  January sure passed quickly, didn’t it?  We are now in our shortest month of the year.  Lent is right around the corner---Feb. 18th!

This liturgical week is again filled with several wonderful celebrations.  Let us take a look at what is coming up-

Monday, Feb. 2 : The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord

This Feast has been celebrated since the 4th century.  It calls to mind that Jesus was presented to the Lord in the Temple.  Simeon says that this Child, Jesus, would be a light to all the nations.

How are we the light of Christ in the world today?

Tuesday, Feb. 3: The Memorial of St. Blaise

St. Blaise was a bishop in Armenia and was martyred in the early 4th century.  He helped someone who was choking, and that person recovered.  He is now associated with the healing of throats.  The faithful gather on this day to have their throats blessed.

Do we use our speech in the correct way?

Thursday, Feb. 5: Obligatory Memorial of St. Agatha

St. Agatha died in the persecution of Christians around 251 A.D.  She was tortured and then had her breasts cut off violently because she would not marry a certain Roman official.  She is the patron saint of breast cancer survivors.  She is mentioned in the Roman Canon and is one of the most revered Saints in the Church.

Do we offer up our sufferings for Christ?

Friday, Feb. 6:  Obligatory Memorial of St. Paul Miki & Companions

St. Paul Miki and his 25 companions were crucified in 1597 in Nagasaki, Japan.   They spread God’s Word to countless people during their missionary efforts.  They were canonized in 1862 by Pope Pius IX.

Do we spread God’s Word to others each day?

May these celebrations encourage us in our faith.  May they draw us closer to Jesus Christ.  May they inspire us to give of ourselves more and more for the Lord who gave His very life for our salvation.

Your Pastor,

Father Joe
