December 7

Dear Parishioners of St. Joseph the Worker:

Welcome to the 2nd week of Advent!  This beautiful season draws us to reflect upon the promise of God for the world—a Savior would come to save us.  And He did.  That is what we celebrate in these days of December.

Monday, December 8th, is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, a Holy Day in our Catholic Church.  This celebrates that Mary was conceived without sin and preserved from sin throughout her life because she bore the Son of God, Jesus Christ.

For us, this means that we are REQUIRED to be at Mass on Monday.  Masses here will be at 8:30am and 5:30PM. This Holy Day is always celebrated, no matter what day it falls on.  To miss Mass on Immaculate Conception is a SERIOUS sin.  Please make sure you come to a Mass here that day or go to one somewhere to fulfill the obligation.

The Blessed Virgin Mary is such an important part of our Catholic faith.  She is the woman who opened her life to God’s plan.  She is the woman who said “yes” to God to be the mother of Jesus.  She is the woman who stood by her Son at the foot of the cross.

Mary can draw us closer to Jesus.  Mary provides an example to all of us to put our faith in God, first and foremost.  Mary should lead us to examine our souls—are they as sinless as they can be?

Let us challenge ourselves this Advent season to exemplify the faith, dedication, openness, sacrifice, prayer, and love of the Blessed Virgin Mary.  She can be our model during these days of preparation and expectant waiting.

This Friday is the Feast of our Lady of Guadalupe, when the Blessed Virgin appeared to several poor children in Mexico.  It is a major celebration for our Mexican brothers and sisters.  May we pray a special rosary that day for the people south of our country.

Your Advent Companion, Father Joe

P.S.  SEE YOU AT MASS THIS MONDAY—8:30am or 5:30pm!
