frleo.jpg Some months ago, a few of us pastors had the pleasure to meet Fr. Leo Patalinghug (Fr. Leo, for short) during his brief visit to the Cathedral.  He prepared a delicious meal and challenged us to urge our parishioners to begin a small, yet significant ritual within our parish families—eat a meal together.  If you’re feeling overworked, over scheduled or overly tired, then take some time out and enjoy a meal with friends or family members. This simple act can help you recharge and reconnect with the people who matter the most to you.

“But, but, but we don’t have time.” (Sure you do:  when you have’ time’ to go to a soccer game, basketball game, swim meet or other athletic activity, you can have ‘time’ to eat together—schedule it like any other activity.)  “What will we talk about?” (Your day, your dreams, your frustrations, your accomplishments, and yes, even your disappointment.)  “What can we eat?”  (Duh:  you’re going to eat something; why not together—at home and at the table)  And don’t forget grace before (and after) meals.  This is an opportunity to lead your children and young adults at home in prayer—something all of us can do.

Below, are the traditional blessings:

Traditional Blessing Before Meals:"Bless us O Lord, and these Thy gifts, which we are about to receive, through Christ our Lord. Amen."

Traditional Blessing After Meals: "We give you thanks O Lord, for these and all Thy gifts, which we have received through Christ our Lord. And, may the souls of the Faithful Departed, through the Mercy of God, Rest in Peace. Amen."
